Dahlov Ipcar


	Dahlov Ipcar (1917-2017) American painter, illustrator and author, best known for her colourful paintings and murals of animals. Born in Vermont in 1917. The daughter of two artists, she began to paint at an early age but did not study art at university, feeling the academic atmosphere stultified her art. She lived on a farm in Maine for many years with her husband and children, raising extra income from selling her art and writing. She illustrated a number of children's books, including many she had written herself. Most of these, like her paintings, feature animals or farm life. Two of her stories featured horses. She has also written and illustrated two non-fictional horse picture books for children about horses around the world and in history. In addition she wrote some adult fiction including a book of short stories, one horse-themed. THE MARVELOUS MERRY-GO-ROUND FIRST EDITION DOUBLEDAY [USA] 1970 ILLUSTRATED BY THE AUTHOR Rare EDITIONS PICTURED: 1st edition SUMMARY: Picture book for younger readers about the horses on a merry-go-round and the man who carves them. Collector's Info: The Marvelous Merry-Go-Round is now rare and can be expensive. One Horse Farm is easy to find in the USA, although harder to find elsewhere.


	Short Story Collections: THE NIGHTMARE AND HER FOAL AND OTHER STORIES (Adult Fiction) FIRST EDITION NORTH COUNTRY PRESS [USA] 1990 ILLUSTRATED BY THE AUTHOR EDITION PICTURED: 1st edition SUMMARY: Book of short fantasy stories for older children to adult readership. The title story features horses (of a sort), not sure about any of the others however. Collector's Info: Faiirly easy to find in the USA, quite hard to get hold of elsewhere.


	Non-fiction Picture Books About Horses: WORLD FULL OF HORSES FIRST EDITION DOUBELDAY [USA] 1955 ILLUSTRATED BY THE AUTHOR Reprinted in hardback by Down East Books in 2014 EDITIONS PICTURED: 1st edition (without dustwrapper), 2014 edition SUMMARY: Picture book for younger readers about the various horses all around us from racehorses to carousel horses. HORSES OF LONG AGO FIRST EDITION DOUBELDAY [USA] 1965 ILLUSTRATED BY THE AUTHOR Reprinted in hardback by Down East Books in 2014 EDITIONS PICTURED: 1st edition, 2014 edition SUMMARY: Picture book for younger readers featuring horses throughout history depicted in beautiful colour illustrations. Collector's Info: Both of these are easy to find in the USA, and can be found elsewhere without a great deal of trouble. First editions can be a bit harder to track down than the later reprints.

Collector's Info: Both these books are still in print at time of writing (2018). The children's biography was a paperback first edition and as far as I know there are no hardback editions. The adult biography is pricey. It is also available as a Kindle e-book.
