Dahlov Ipcar (1917-2017)
American painter, illustrator and author, best known for her colourful paintings and murals of animals. Born in Vermont in 1917. The daughter of two artists, she began to paint at an early age but did not study art at university, feeling the academic atmosphere stultified her art. She lived on a farm in Maine for many years with her husband and children, raising extra income from selling her art and writing. She illustrated a number of children's books, including many she had written herself. Most of these, like her paintings, feature animals or farm life. Two of her stories featured horses. She has also written and illustrated two non-fictional horse picture books for children about horses around the world and in history. In addition she wrote some adult fiction including a book of short stories, one horse-themed.
